In 1994, Japanese game developer Toshimitsu Takagi released a game called 'Crimson Room' on the internet. This game received a cult following worldwide and reinvented the 'Escape the Room' genre of games. This genre is similar to an adventure or puzzle game and is usually made in Adobe Flash. In an 'Escape the Room' game, the player finds themself trapped in a room. The player then must explore the room and interact with the objects in order to find a way to escape.
The 'Escape the Room' genre is a great genre to use when introducing students to game design as it provides a solid introduction to actionscript, whilst also enabling students to develop a narrative and to create their own context for the game play. In addition to this, once students have mastered making a simple 'Escape the Room' game, they can use the skills they have developed to create rooms with more complexity and games with multiple rooms or locations. Thus, in many ways, when making an 'Escape the Room' game, students are really beginning their adventure with game design.
Examples of Escape the Room Games
The model game and tutorial in this kit will assist students in creating a simple version of an 'Escape the Room' game. This type of game is usually much harder to play and game play can involve problem solving over a number of days and hours. To gain a better understanding of this genre of games, teachers and students are encouraged to explore games of this genre on the web. As sites change and some games sites contain inappropriate content, I have not compiled a list of sites or games on this page. To learn more about 'Escape the Room' games, go to Wikipedia at www.wikipedia.org and do a search on 'Escape the Room' games. You can also search for these games using Google.

The Escape the Room Model Game
To support the tutorial in this kit, I have created a model game that you can download and deconstruct. Whilst it is a very simple model of an 'Escape the Room' game, it provides an insight into game design and actionscript in Flash.
Remember also that there are usually many different ways to create the interaction you want in Flash. The script used in this game is just one approach. You may find others that are more efficient as you become more familiar with scripting in Flash.
As with all of the Flash Classroom resources, the tutorials and resources in this kit have been created with great care to ensure that they are easy to follow and are error free. If you do encounter any problems or errors whilst working through our materials, please email us to let us know so that we can fix them.
This kit has been created by our Flash Classroom Project Manager Kristine Kopelke. If you find the kit useful or have a story to share about how you have used these or other Flash Classroom resources, please send them through to us. We also welcome contributions to our Flash Classroom gallery. So if you or one of your students create a great 'Escape the Room' or 'Adventure' game with the help of these resources, please send them through so that we can share them in our gallery.
